Last year Kate attempted to save the world ‘political comedy may yet have found its new messiah’ (The Guardian). Now she thinks perhaps it is time to burn it all down. Everything is falling apart. What does it mean to be a good time girl (and a feminist) in the midst of an apocalypse? Expect stories about the farmer she could have married, an awards ceremony after party, appearing on BBC Radio 4 and Berlin STI tests interspersed with razor sharp political comedy on colonialism and the rise of fascism. ‘A skillful mix of raunchy, raconteurial energy and cutting social commentary, which seems to reflect the delicate modern balancing act of fighting the good fight whilst having a bloody good time before the whole thing goes up in flames’ (European Comedy Review)

About

Kate Cheka is an artist, stand-up comedian and writer who has performed in over ten countries across four continents. The 2023 Funny Women Award winner her debut sold out Edinburgh show received critical acclaim and went on to a Soho Theatre run. She was also nominated for the 2025 DIVA Magazine Queer comedian of the year award and the Chortle 2024 Best Newcomer award. As heard on The Guilty Feminist podcast, and Radio 4’s The News Quiz and The Matt Forde Focus Group. Comedy with a unique blend of joy and disdain or as The Guardian said ‘political comedy may yet have found its new messiah.’

As an artist whose primary creative medium is human emotion, either trying to make people laugh (comedy), think (philosophical musings) or feel (storytelling). She has travelled extensively, studied in four different countries and performed stand-up in over ten. Born in London she grew up in the West Country and has lived in Berlin and Buenos Aires as well as Delhi and Dar es Salaam. Her primary focus is always the human lived experience, the best art walks with you through life, reflecting back our intimate feelings as well as (hopefully) providing inspirational impetus for revolutionary acts

She began comedy in Berlin where she organised and hosted two shows, a femme-identifying open mic and a women of colour showcase. The Funny Women Award winner of 2023, she was also a Chortle Best Newcomer nominee 2024, a BBC New Comedy Awards regional finalist 2022, a finalist at the Berlin New Stand-up Award in 2019 and BBC Radio 4 Introducing New Comedy Award 2019 nominee as well as Funny Women semi-finalist in both 2021 and 2022. Described as having ‘stylish comedy delivered with a great blend of joy and disdain’ she started comedy to spite an ex who once said ‘I thought you were more fun’.

‘Kate is a multi-talented comic, with plenty up her sleeve and a lot more to share’ – Zoe Paskett, Funny Women Review

Her debut unpublished feminist science fiction novel won the Morley Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour 2021 and was shortlisted for a number of awards including the Penguin WriteNow Prize 2020, Deborah Rogers Foundation 2021, the Mo Siewcharran Prize 2022 . She has written articles and essays for a variety of print and online magazines and zines including LMAOnaise and Daddy

NOMINEE – NextUp’s Biggest Award In Comedy Best Newcomer

Funny Women award winner and Chortle Best Newcomer nominee brings you her debut hour where she tries to save the world. Where does this messiah complex come from? Is it the second coming or has she just inherited her mother’s psychological disorder? If you’re anxious about the state of the world (or just your own mental state), join this ‘impressive, frank and relatable’ (Chortle.co.uk) BBC New Comedy Awards semi-finalist as she becomes the first woman to wonder what many men have wondered before her: am I actually God?

She was the first comedian artist-in-residence at A Studio in the Woods in New Orleans the winter of 2024 where she produced and hosted The Late Late Stage Capitalism Show a late-night style talk show about climate change. Her debut show A MESSIAH COMES 💦💦was born in the woods in New Orleans, the first “work-in-progress” took place on April Fool’s day, the second, ten days later in Berlin. It has been a slightly hurried labour of love but some of the best romances are whirlwind. I’ve work-shopped it in seven countries but it was made for my birth nation of the UK. And for me. For teenage Kate who had lots of thoughts on the world and no platform on which to share them.
